Custom Drop Point Hunting Knife | USS New Jersey Teak
Custom Drop Point Hunting Knife | USS New Jersey Teak
This one-of-a-kind drop point hunting knife was handcrafted by David Carey for his cousin, an avid deer hunter and proud U.S. Navy veteran.
Given full artistic freedom, Dave set out to create something that reflected both his cousin's military service and their shared family history.
The centerpiece of the handle is teak wood salvaged from the original deck of the USS New Jersey (BB-62), one of the most decorated battleships in U.S. Navy history. The teak is paired with black canvas Micarta, anchor mosaic pins, and brass accents.
Billy did have one request: if he dropped his knife or set it down while hunting, he wanted to be able to find it. Dave incorporated glow-in-the-dark white liners into the handle, adding a practical feature that also creates a striking contrast against the black Micarta.
The personal details continue into the handmade lanyard. Along with a custom brass bead, Dave incorporated a whitetail deer antler bead made from an antler collected at the Carey family ranch in Montana. As boys, the cousins spent summers together on the ranch, working and making memories.
Completing the lanyard is an original steel deck bolt from the USS New Jersey, connecting another piece of naval history to the finished knife.
The blade is crafted from CPM154 stainless steel, hardened to 62 HRC, and finished with a hand-rubbed satin finish. A custom-fitted Kydex sheath completes the knife.
A functional hunting knife with a history all its own.
